Chester MP Chris Matheson has spoken out about the need for a support package for the aviation sector after Airbus announced more than 1,400 job losses at its Broughton plant.
As a major local employer, Airbus has many workers in Chester and surrounding areas. Chris has previously raised the need for support for those industries which have been hardest hit by the Coronavirus pandemic, and talked about the large number of constituents that he has been supporting with these issues.
Following the announcement, Chris said: With Airbus, it’s a devastating announcement. I hope these are the only job losses. This will be a difficult period for everyone concerned because these are high value, highly skilled jobs, which we can ill afford to lose.
“The Government needs to come up with a sector support plan for aviation and aerospace before we lose the critical mass of these vital jobs and I call upon Airbus management to work with the trade unions to make the smallest cuts possible.”
