MP and Theatre Boss in bid to woo the Royal Shakespeare Company to Chester

Chester’s MP, Chris Matheson, has joined forces with Alex Clifton, Artistic Director of Chester Performs, to bring the Royal Shakespeare Company to Chester.

Chris took Alex along to the Barbican in London where the RSC is performing Henry V, to meet senior RSC staff and introduce them to the new theatre project in Chester. Chris had been invited due to his work on the Commons Select Committee for Culture, Media and Sport.

Alex and Chris are hoping to attract an RSC touring production to the new theatre, which is expected to open its doors in late 2016.

Chris Matheson said:

“Alex is working hard to get top productions into the new theatre and you can’t get more prestigious than the RSC. I said I would put Chester on the map and this is a great opportunity to get talks started with the RSC – for whom this would also be a prestigious offer, as theirs could be one of the first major productions in the brand new theatre.

“There is a long way to go yet, and these things take time to negotiate, but Alex and I will keep working to bring the RSC here.

“Alex Clifton is a major asset to the arts in Chester and having him on board makes a huge difference. The RSC people clearly recognised in him a fellow theatre man who understood their needs.”
