A Labour Councillor for Blacon, Carol Gahan, has launched an initiative with local food banks for families who may find the summer holidays a difficult time financially.
Councillor Gahan said: “The summer holidays can be a difficult time for families because now that schools are closed, there is no longer the certainty of some children receiving a lunchtime meal every weekday, and the problem of replacing this provision can be especially difficult for those families whose children are eligible for free school meals.
“Those in need of emergency food provision can receive vouchers and schools have also been offered training to become voucher holding agencies which will enable schools to work with families who may need extra support. This is already taking place for Blacon Educational Village schools.”
Councillor Carol Gahan made contact with West Cheshire Foodbank regarding her Blacon ward but with the charity’s support, the initiative has been expanded to cover Chester and Ellesmere Port as well as Winsford and Northwich covered by Mid Cheshire Foodbank.
Labour MP for Chester, Chris Matheson said: “This is a typical example of how Labour is delivering for local people. Some families in our community face challenging times ahead and Councillor Gahan has brought local government together with the charity sector to really make a difference.”
